wWw -
wide Windway

What is it all about?

The width of the windway has a decisive influence on the playing characteristics of a recorder.

Usually , I tend to base the windways of my instruments on historical models. These have comparatively narrow windways with a slight blowing resistance. This allows for nuanced playing that offers a wide range of timbres.

In recent years, instruments with extremely wide windways have become available, which not only allow for playing with “a lot of air,” but actually require this.

These extremely wide windways were never what I had in mind for my own idea of sound.

More and more players are now looking for a “middle ground” – slightly more open windways without falling into extremes.

I now offer this option on request.

What is wWw?

wide Windway is a slightly wider windway that allows for playing with more air without compromising the nuanced sound of the recorder.

This means greater dynamics and more forceful playing possibilities without losing the sound spectrum typical for recorders.

However, this requires the player to handle the instrument with a little more force.

These instruments are designed for players with sufficient experience.

The range of possible solutions is wide—wider than with my “normal” windways.

So the motto is: try it out.

Usually, I can offer you a small number of instruments with a wide windway, currently mainly baroque alto recorders in 415 or 440 Hz.

Just ask, or - even better - come to me directly!
